Butterfly Effect is a brand-new ballet from Australian choreographer and Helpmann Award winner, Alice Topp. Drawing inspiration from the well-known opera, Madame Butterfly, Alice has recontextualised the story for modern audiences.
Set in contemporary Australia, our Butterfly is Charlie, a US Marine posted at an army training base in Darwin. There, she meets Patterson, they fall in love and soon welcome their first child. But as tensions overseas escalate, Charlie is deployed to serve at the front. When Charlie returns from active duty, she struggles to fall back into the life she left behind.
Butterfly Effect weaves together threads from the old and the new, through themes of love, loss, and shattering betrayal, and Puccini's classical score.
Joining Alice to create this world premiere is Sydney-based composer Jessica Wells, who has created a new score, incorporating elements of the original music. Highly acclaimed designer, Jon Buswell, has been enlisted to design the sets and renowned creative Aleisa Jelbart will design the costumes.
