Butterfly Effect is a brand-new ballet from Australian choreographer and Helpmann Award winner, Alice Topp. Inspired by chaos theory, the original John Luther Long troubled tale of Madame Butterfly and the iconic Puccini melodies, our Butterfly Effect is an evolution, taking place six generations on, in contemporary Western Australia.
It centres on Charlie. A young, inspired woman in conflict with her own decisions and wrestling with societal expectations. Like a butterfly in transformation, we watch Charlie, a working Army Medic fall in love, become a mother, fight for change and aim to make an impact for good in a world that doesn’t make that pursuit easy.
Joining Alice to create this world premiere is Sydney-based composer Jessica Wells, who has created a new score, incorporating elements of the original music. Highly acclaimed designer, Jon Buswell, has been enlisted to design the sets and renowned creative Aleisa Jelbart will design the costumes.
Patrons of the West Australian Ballet Campione program have generously led the build of new works since 2008. Through this key support of our artistic vision, our Campione have created a legacy of repertoire championed by and for Western Australians.
