As an end of year treat, hear from West Australian Ballet’s Artistic Director and Co-Choroegrapher of The Nutcracker, Aurélien Scannella, prior to the performance, before networking with other young professionals.

 

As Artistic Director, Aurélien Scannella is responsible for leading the delivery of his Artistic Vision for West Australian Ballet by crafting its whole performance product, building and maintaining the Company’s dance force and programming and planning WAB’s performance catalogue. Aurélien will explain how he finds the balance between challenging and motivating his dancers, provoking emotion with an audience, showing respect for the history and tradition of this art form while also attracting new audiences with bold new works.

Solor, son of the Maharajah, has pledged his undying love to the beautiful Nikiya, a bayadère (temple dancer). When he is forced by his father to marry the Governor-General’s daughter, a string of tragic consequences is unleashed.

 

This sumptuous new production of La Bayadère will sweep you into the exotic world of the 19th century British Raj. Within a cauldron of colonial politics, glittering ballrooms and opium-fuelled dreams, Solor and Nikiya are entwined through life, death and the ghostly Kingdom of the Shades.

A 178-year-old tale of impossible love, vengeful ghosts and the ultimate forgiveness. With coveted virtuoso roles and an iconic ‘white ballet act’, this transcendent Romantic-era ballet has stood the test of time – maybe because first love and heartbreak resonates with us all.

 

Peasant girl Giselle, beautiful and innocent, falls deeply for Albrecht, a prince in disguise. When she discovers he is engaged to another, her grief and shock at his deception sends her mad. She dies of a broken heart and her spirit joins the ‘Wilis’ – ghosts of women betrayed.

 

The revengeful Wilis lure men into the forest and cruelly force them to dance to their death. They have set their eyes on Albrecht, and Giselle must summon all within her to save him from this terrible fate.
