West Australian Ballet welcomes Maina Gielgud AO

We are excited to soon be welcoming former Prima Ballerina Maina Gielgud AO who will be here at West Australian Ballet from next week. She will be giving class to our dancers for the fortnight leading up to our forthcoming Canberra tour October 13th-19th!

Maina is a British born former principal dancer with the Sadlers Wells Royal Ballet, Staatsoper Ballet Berlin and the London Festival Ballet. She began her schooling in London, later moving to France to complete her training with well-known artists of the time in Paris, Cannes and Monte Carlo.

Following her lengthy, successful career as a dancer she became artistic director of The Australian Ballet from 1983 to 1996 and is still the company’s longest serving director to date. Afterwards she directed the Royal Danish Ballet and later held the artistic associate position at the Houston Ballet until 2005.

During her time as a dancer she frequently guested at leading ballet companies worldwide. Throughout this period and whilst later working as a director, she was involved in the creation of many new works as well as the re-staging and introduction of classical productions to numerous ballet companies internationally. In her 14 years at The Australian Ballet she introduced over 40 classical and modern works to the company’s repertoire.

In 1991 she was appointed an Honorary Officer of the Order of Australia in recognition of her contribution to the performing arts.
