Gakuro Matsui

Gakuro was born in Tokyo, Japan and graduated from L’Ecole de Danse de l’Opera national de Paris, and Mika Sasaki Ballet Academy. As a professional dancer, he has worked with Royal Danish Ballet, Norwegian National Ballet (as Principal), and with Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo.


Gakuro joined West Australian Ballet in 2015 and was promoted to Principal dancer in 2016.


His career highlights include winning a prize at Prix de Lausanne, and performing the roles of Basilio in Rudolf Noureev’s Don Quixote, Albrecht in Cynthia Harvey’s Giselle, Prince Florimand in Harvey’s Sleeping Beauty, Lensky in Cranko’s Onegin, Romeo in Michael Corder’s Romeo and Juliet, Prince Siegfried in Anna Marie Holmes’s Swan Lake, and Lescaut in Macmilan’s Manon.


Gakuro has also danced many pieces from Balanchine, Duato, Dawson, Forsythe, Kilyan, and Lightfoot Leon.


During his time at West Australan Ballet Gakuro has danced many significant roles including Prince in Smeulders, Delasalle & Scannella’s The Nutcracker, Jay Gatsby in David Nixon’s The Great Gatsby, Romeo in Yuri Vamos’s Romeo and Juliet, James, and Gurn, in Dinna Bjørn’s La Sylphide.
