COVID-19 Update

West Australian Ballet and the Company’s established COVID-19 Response Team have been consistently monitoring and reacting to the COVID-19 Pandemic. Following the Phase 4 announcement from The Honourable Mark McGowan MLA Premier of Western Australia, and in consultation with Company Chair, Ms Sherry Duhe, West Australian Ballet is pleased to announce effective Saturday 27 June 2020, we are able to offer increased audience capacity at all scheduled performances and increased public activities, hosted safely and in line with the Western Australian Government Phase 4 requirements and the 2sqm capacity rule.

West Australian Ballet is now pleased to announce changes to the following activities and events at the West Australian Ballet Centre;

  • CoVid Lab; increased audience capacity for both matinee and evening performances on 27 June 2020.
    • A creative showcase of solos and duos created by our dancers to one of four set music tracks and with physical distancing considered in choreography. Following a solo and/or duo performance, a workshop ‘twist’ will take place for approximately one hour.
  • Genesis; increased audience capacity for nine performances from 30 July to 8 August 2020 (rescheduled from March 2020).
    • The Company’s annual creative showcase sees dancers choreograph new works on their fellow dancers, with full production lighting and music in use at the West Australian Ballet Centre.
  • Adult Ballet Classes; effective Monday 29 June, a full schedule of Adult Public Classes in Studios 2,3 and 4 will commence. All classes are available for booking from 5pm on Friday 26 June 2020.

West Australian Ballet have completed the WA Government’s required COVID-19 Health and Safety Plan, as well as an Event Management Plan and West Australian Ballet staff have undertaken the Federal Department of Health online course in COVID-19 Infection Control Training. We continue to have strict cleaning protocols throughout the West Australian Ballet Centre and encourage all staff and general public to adhere to the following recommendations:

  • If you are unwell, please stay home, do not come to the ballet centre;
  • Practice social distancing where possible;
  • Avoid physical greetings, such as handshakes, hugs and kisses;
  • Wash your hands regularly for at least 20 seconds with soap and water and/or alcohol based hand sanitiser located throughout the West Australian Ballet Centre; and
  • Cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze or cough. Use a flexed elbow or a tissue; if you use a tissue, dispose of it immediately and appropriately in the bins provided.

The Company notes the return of award-winning season Dracula, is planned to be presented at His Majesty’s Theatre in September and await the planned release of Phase 5 easing of restrictions, scheduled for July 18 2020, pending Government advice. Further updates will be provided at this time.

Watch Genesis

Genesis – Online performance

Sometimes, it’s only when we’re forced apart that we remember the power of exchange. The exchange of thoughts, passion, ideas and energy between one another.

We want to return you to the wonder of performance. Of stepping back into a broader world, even if you can’t leave your front door. At a time when we’re all being separated from art, from music, and from each other, there’s never been a more important moment to bring the wonder of ballet into our homes.

In collaboration with Media & Communications Partner The West Australian we’re proud to present our experimental mini-season of short contemporary works choreographed by our very own Company Dancers.

Filmed at West Australian Ballet Centre before social distancing commenced, Genesis is available State-wide to watch for free in the comfort of your own home until 30 June.
